Welcome to the lecture course: Advanced Methods of Numerical Analysis 1 - 4

This course is aimed for motivated Master students as well as Ph.D -students working on a field of numerical analysis or on industrial or scientific applications that require numerical computations.

For computer scientist the course offers in depth knowledge of various phenomena encountered in simulation practise. These (often painfull) symptoms of simulations are impossible to truly master without understanding of applied methods and their mathematical background and the mathematical background of the problem in hand.

For mathematician the course displays high variety of different applications of mathematics (mainly functional analysis). In most practically interesting problems analytical solutions are impossible to acquire, but all information about the solution is valuable (worth real money). With the help of mathematical analysis and computation power solutions can be approximated and their errors estimated, even tough the exact solution is unknown.

Pre-requisities

Curiosity and open mind is all you need. All preliminary knowledge from functional analysis, theory of ODE's and numerical methods is usefull but not necessity.

Practical information

The series of lectures consists of four individual courses. The first one (Advanced Methods of Numerical Analysis 1) will be organized on March 2008. In all questions concerning the course please write to olli.mali@jyu.fi.

Each course is done by doing the assignments given on lectures. On the first course (March 2008) passing is awarded by 4 ECTS (4 op).
